BUS DRIVER, Full Time

 

REPORTS TO:  Director of Transportation

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with ability to obtain P/S endorsements.
  2. Valid CPR Certification.  
  3. At least 18 years of age.
  4. Successfully complete DOT physical and drug/alcohol screen.

 

PREFERENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/ EXPERIENCE:

  1. At least one year of experience driving school bus or similar occupation.

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

In support of the mission of the school district, ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route; operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Non-contractual (At-will), Manual Trades Pay Grade 4

187 Days, estimated 8 hours daily, Wage/Hour Status:  Nonexempt

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Follows assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  2. Drives bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  3. Checks bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
  4. Reports all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures; completes required reports.
  5. Keeps records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption; name and seating assignment of passengers transported.
  6. Keeps bus clean and fueled.
  7. Supervises students while they board, ride and exit the bus. 
  8. Communicates with administration, as needed, regarding student behavior while on bus.
  9. Instructs students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  10. Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses. 
  11. Inspects bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving and records findings.
  12. Ensures proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
  13. Corrects unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and informs supervisor of any conditions that are not immediately correctable.
  14. Reports any hazardous conditions along the route.
  15. Operates two-way radio equipment to communicate with school staff and administration.
  16. Attends and successfully completes required training program and DOT physicals and testing to maintain required certification.
  17. Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations. 
  18. Maintains and respects the confidentiality of student, personnel and district information.
  19. Performs other tasks and assumes responsibilities as related to the the position and as assigned.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:  School bus; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs and fire extinguisher; two-way radio.

Mental Demands:  Has ability to: read, effectively communicate (verbally and written), maintain emotional control under stress, and work prolonged and/or irregular hours. 

 

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:   Prolonged sitting, frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling; reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions; work outside and inside; prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension and reaching; limited light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) on a daily basis; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles; possible biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students.  Must have ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
